Studying and Learning in Soils 201
To many, indtroductory soils  is a challenging class.  Possibly this is so because  the study of soils relies on knowledge of so many fields, plus the ability to at least begin integrating that knowledge to understand this precious and amazing natural resource.

Tips for this class (likely applicable to others, as well)
  • Come to class
  • Read the relevant section of your text ahead of time
  • Review each session's notes later the same day, reread relevant sections in your text to clarify unclear points
  • Take 5 min the day of class to summarizie the key things you learned in that day's session(s)
  • Talk with your classmates (or your roommate, or your mom, etc.) about what you learned that day, or that week.  (It will encourage you to know it pretty well if you are going to be able to explain it to someone else!)
  • Participate whole-heartedly in the hands-on activities
  • Do all your assignments thoughtfully, and on time.  (This subject is like an orchestra - there are a lot of parts, and many play off of each other!)
  • Follow the tips and pointers given by your instructor(s) & TA
  • If you don't understand, ask. (If you are thinking of asking, chances are there are other people in the room with the same question!)
Study questions.   Also check out the study questions at the end of each chapter in the text.

Interactive Self-Tests
Besides the study questions in your text and above, there are a few opportunities for you to quiz yourself online interactively:

1.
Prentice Hall Textbooks
Web site to the soil science textbooks published by Prentice Hall.

2. The Pedosphere and its Dynamics
Web site to soil science textbook by Noorallah Juma, University of Alberta. With interactive soil science self-tests.

Old Exams
(note: the sequence of topics has changed between the years, but the questions asked here should give you ideas of the types of questions on this year's exams.)

Remember, our exams will consist of several different types of questions, including multiple choice, short answer, fill in the blank, matching, short essays, and/or other types.

Many of the resources availble on this website require the Adobe Acrobat Reader. It can be downloaded by clicking on the link below.
