Spring 2006
Course Goal :
To become
familiar with the fundamental concepts and skills in the field of Soil
Science.
Specific Objectives
1.
Students will gain a basic
understanding of the properties of soils, and the processes that occur
in soils
2. Students will know
how to
question,
research, interpret and integrate relevant Soil Science information
when presented with agronomic or environmental issues.
Key
topics include: Soil formation and
morphology; Soil biological, chemical, and physical processes; soil
classification, soil ecology, soil erosion, soil fertility, soil
management, soil pollution, soil quality, soil survey, soil water,
sustainable agriculture, composting, and land use.

none (but if you plan to take Chemistry anyway, it may be helpful to
take Chemistry first)
Class
Format:
- Two
1-hour lectures
(College Hall 220), T,Th 10:35-11:25 am (by concensus, we have moved the meeting
time to T,Th 10:45-11:35)
- Plus one 1-hour hands-on session at
one
of the following times:
Wed 1:10-2pm or 2:10-3pm (PBS1 room 43)
or Thurs 1:10-2 (PBS1 room 43)

Biological,
chemical, and physical
properties of soils; fundamentals of soil ecology; Soil-water-plant
relations, soil fertility,
